Finally got the new pedals, bars, and bar tape Santa brought me on the Gravel 820. Switched to Crankbrothers Doubleshot pedals because they’re flat on one side & usual egg beater clip on the other. That way I can cruise around campgrounds without having to worry about changing shoes unless I want to.

What a stage on the TdF today! Amazing racing in the Alps, and they just had to stop the stage short because the last valley they have to go though has so much snow on the road it needs to be cleared! Watching the riders try to figure out what’s up is crazy!

I’ve been trying to get back in the habit of blogging again. I finally have a setup I’m reasonably happy with (git/Hugo workflow, I should do a longer post on it), now I just need to do more of it. I’ve been seeing guys like Daniel Jalkut and Brent Simmons encouraging people to maybe think about blogging more, and I figured I’d use it as an excuse to babble on the subject a bit too.

That, and I just love seeing a big pro peloton cruising through a typical American suburb, complete with minivans and SUVs parked in the driveways.

So I’ve been working on taking parts off of my old Raleigh road bike, and putting them on my even older Trek 820. It’s mostly been going pretty well. Turns out the 3x8 road shifters I have are compatible with the 3x7 drivetrain my Trek has. Unfortunately, the long pull v-brakes had to be replaced with cantilevers, but that wasn’t too expensive. The real kick in the teeth was last night however.

I’ve ridden more on Zwift so far this year than I have in either 2018 or 2017 both indoors and out. And I’m damn close to having ridden more so far this year than in both years combined. And while that probably says more about how rough 2017 & 2018 were, I’m super stoked, and really looking forward to seeing how my riding progresses for the rest of the year. And I credit a lot of that to not only Zwift, but to the great community that has started to crop up around Zwift lately.

First Zwift Group Ride

I’ve been on Zwift since the Jarvis Island days, but I kinda stopped using it around the time that the in-game group ride stuff started to roll out. I’d ride occationally on Zwift, but really, I just wasn’t riding much at all. Another story for another time. So I figured I should try out at least one group ride before I try a Zwift race. Not really the same thing, but from what I’ve seen on Twitch, it looks like the races share at least some of the in-game mechanics as the group rides.

I’ve been looking through the list of events on Zwift, and it turns out a lot of the races have a low enough power category that even someone like me, who’s down in the 1.5-2.2 w/kg range somewhere, might have a shot of hanging with the group. I took my first FTP test in years earlier in the week, and landed around 172W. Not great, but not as far from my peak of 235W.

I picked up a used trainer for cheap over the summer, mostly because my 9 year old is finally on a big enough bike (24”) that he can use one, and he doesn’t do much to stay active over the winter. My original intent was just to have him spin along side me while I did Zwift or a Sufferfest video. Then I found out that Zwift let’s kids under 13 ride free!

Sounds like, at least in our little corner of CT, voter turnout was through the roof. I ran into our First Selectwoman on the way out from voting around 2:00 today. She said our town was already up over 42% turnout. If I remember right, our turnout on presidential years usually maxes out around the high 50s, and much lower for mid terms and local. Should be interesting to see what the turnout numbers are like around the country, no matter who wins.
